The Scarlet Ibis Discussion Thread

FIRST, please answer the following questions, I provided, regarding "The Scarlet Ibis";
when you are done, ask 2 more interpretative level questions that will propel this discussion further (save the critical questions for the end). You must respond to someone else's questions and comments at least three times (try varying up the people you respond to); show a rigorous, meaningful discussion regarding this text's ideals, values and messages. Use your annotations to help your responses.
Fluency and mechanics are a piece of your grade, so be thoughtful with how you write!

I will also be on this discussion thread once you have time to answer the questions.  I will transition us accordingly.

1.   How is the scarlet ibis a symbol for Doodle?  Be specific in your comparison
2.  List one sensory image that you felt was most powerful and tell me the effect (hence, reference a specific poignant image from the text, and what does it create?)
3.  What did you take away from this short story?  How does it speak to you?

4.  Read the following poem and answer the questions:

"Woman with Flower" by Naomi Long Madgett

I wouldn’t coax the plant if I were you.
Such watchful nurturing may do it harm.
Let the soil rest from so much digging-
And wait until it‘s dry before you water it.
The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction;
Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself.

Much growth is stunted by too careful
Prodding,
Too eager tenderness.
The things we love we have to learn to
 leave alone.

Post questions for above poem:
1.  What is this poem's message?  Do you agree with the poem's message?  Use specific reference to lines and words as a part of your response.
2.  What advice does the poem seem to offer the narrator form "The Scarlet Ibis"?

  1. 1. Egyptians believed the ibis symbolized perseverance, aspiration and the soul. How would this connect to the story of Doodle and his brother?

    2. In the story, the narrator says, "Pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death." What do you think this means? Why is it significant to what we know about the narrator and his motives? Do you agree with this statement?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Notice how the narrator's expectations of Doodle are tied with his own feelings. Do you judge him for his pride as much as he judges himself?

What is the effect of having the narrator look back at the events after they happened? Why does Hurst end the story there and not return to the present?

  3. 1. In the story "Scarlet Ibis" when Doodle was born he was 'red and shriveled' he couldn't get too hot or too cold, or too tired, and should always be treated gently. The Scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because the Ibis had to be treated like Doodle, they died the same way- both got caught in a storm and died after the long journey. The scarlet Ibis was a bird version of Doodle, acted the same way, did everything the same way.
    2. The sensory image that I felt was most powerful in the story was when Doodle and his brother were at Old Woman Swamp and his brother had him touch his own casket. And how he threatened Doodle that if he didn't touch it he would leave him there, and Doodle started crying out "Don't leave me". I thought this was a message to show the readers how cruel the human mind can be, how malice we can be to those who look up to us. "One day I took him up to the barn loft and showed him his casket" who would ever even consider doing this to some one who loves you dearly and needs you?
    3. What I took from the story was how atrocious us humans can really be to people who are so helpless in life. The part that stuck out to me was when the older brother was planning on killing Doodle because he wasn't "all there". It showed that you have to love people for who they are and accept them, support them.
    1. The poems message is that we can't always be conscientious with things we love the most, we have to let that thing learn on its own, to be there only when it really needs your help. When there is too much careful in the world, you can't grow and live life.
    2. The advice the poem offers the narrator is that we all have to live without worries or doubt, we seek to those we need most when we lost our way. The advice is we need to not be so uptight with the little things in life.

One question of mine is: why do other people feel the need to change a person because they don't live up to other's standards?
My second question is why do people lose faith so easily in others?

    1. I completely agree with you that it was cruel how Doodle's brother made him touch his casket but I feel that he made him do this because he wanted Doodle to see that he accomplished/ overcame a challenge and that nothing can stop him.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you too. Doodles brother was cruel.

      Delete
    3. In response to the second question, I think that people lose faith in others so easily because you can lose trust by doing one thing whereas building trust takes repeated trust building actions.

  4. One of my favorite quotes from the text says, "There is within me (and with some sadness I have watched it in others) a knot of cruelty borne by the stream of love, much as our blood sometimes bears the seeds of our destruction..." How do you respond to this quote? Can love and cruelty coexist?

  5. 1) The scarlet ibis is a symbol because it has issues similar to Doodle's, and he is unable to take care of himself. The members of Doodle's family also originally thought Doodle was going to die young and that he was bad luck, just like the Grandmother had heard that a dead ibis was bad luck.

    2) An example of a sensory image would be would be the father having a casket built for Doodle and naming him something that would only sound good on a gravestone. I believe that this can relate to much of history, where if a baby is expected to die or is weak it is just killed to prevent it from growing up.

    3) This story reminds me about how hard life can be, especially when you have problems that most other people don't have. I take away with me that humans are cruel or unfair by nature.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    1) This poem's message is instead of constantly protecting something, you have to let it grow by itself sometimes, otherwise you may not help it. In this world, you have to learn to take care of yourself.

    2) Doodle should learn to help himself occasionally. The two brothers should spend some time apart so that they don't get mad at each other like they did in the story. One boy's anger unintentionally resulted in the other's death.

    Questions;

    1) How can the narrator relate to Doodle in the story?

    2) Why aren't the parent's more involved in this learning process.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think they weren't really involved cause it was during the day and they were either working or cleaning or something and it was also kind of a brother bonding deal.

      Delete
    2. I don't think the parents were involved because they didn't know and because they were to ashamed to look at their disabled/ disappointment of a child.

      Delete
    3. The parents weren't involved in Doodles learning because they did not know. When the narrator went off with Doodle, they just assumed that they were hanging out. The narrator didn't the parents because he felt like this was his responsibility, and only he could get the job done.

      Delete
    4. I think the parents weren't involved because I think they didn't want to get their hopes too high up. I think they were afraid that he would die and their efforts would not help.

      Delete
  6. The ibis is a symbol for doodle in a way that he traveled so far and made such big strides to be able to end up in there front yard. And doodle walked when people said he wouldn't and he swam and lived his life how the people said he couldn't but he died cause of how he lived.

2 A good image from the story is when he is describing the swamp the shades of green the sweet smell how the vines hang every little detail is there and you almost feel like you are there.

    3. What I took away from the story was two things. 1 that a brother can help you do anything 2 that some times the things you love the most you have to let go. Cause he taught doodle to walk to swim to row a boat and they never gave up and they did it together. But he also knew during the storm he couldn't have made it out with him they would have both died he just had to run and hope he would be ok.

4(1) I think its saying that you have to let things develop on there own they will find there own way in life. You cant force the flower to grow right away but it will eventually grow into a rose or something. The advice I think it gives is that it was doodles time to die and he lived more then anyone thought he would and they should be happy about that.

1 What if he had stayed with doodle would he have lived or would they both die.

2 Did doodle live a full life.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do not think that Doodle could have possibly lived a full life because he only lived to a very young age. But on the other hand, Doodle did exceed his life expectancy for being born not a normal child. He may have also died just a few days or months later. Maybe his time was already coming and the storm was just what put him over the edge.

      Delete
    2. Doodle did not live a full life because he wasn't able to experience a lot of things. He missed out on his teenage years and his adulthood. He died as a little kid which means he didn't get to see his future and neither did his family. Doodle lived a short, hard life.

      Delete
    3. I believe that Doodle lived life to his fullest everyday, he lived how he wanted to live. He got the chance to take part in this world. Doodle did live a full life to his potential. His brother made his life better by teaching him things he couldn't do, or that his parents never took part in.

      Delete
    4. I think that for the few years that Doodle lived he lived his lift to the fullest. He was very young so he could not do a lot of things but he did the things he could do to the fullest.

      Delete

  7. 1. The scarlet ibis is a direct metaphor for Doodle. The bird came to the farm from a storm, much like how Doodle was a struggled with his disabilities from the day he was born. The bird had travelled many miles only to die at the food of the bleeding tree. Doodle also came a far way from having to be in a cart, to walking. Both the scarlet ibis and Doodle worked so hard to advance in life, only to have that life taken away from them.
    2. The visual imagery was very strong in this story. This really painted a picture in my mind and made the mood of the story stand out more. In the beginning when the seen was set, there was a dark feeling. Also the 'clove of the season' was very first sentence when the mood was dark. The 'clove of the season was mentioned in end when the mood darkened.
    3. When the author kept changing his mind about Doodle, made the story harder to follow. The story would have been better if the narrator disliked Doodle, then liked him, instead of changing his mind so often. This was powerful though because the narrator talked about killing Doodle, to making it is goal to improve his life.

    After Poem.
    1. The poem is say to not push your luck, that too much a good thing becomes bad. I do agree with the poem, that too much of anything can be bad. This reminds me of parents. When the parent watches over there kids too much, the kids don't always know what to do when they are on their own. "Such watchful nurturing may do it harm... The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction." Being too overprotective and do more harm than good.

    Post questions for above poem:
    1. What is this poem's message? Do you agree with the poem's message? Use specific reference to lines and words as a part of your response.
    2. This poem shows that when the author overprotected Doodle, things went down hill. The author should have been less selfish. He wanted a feeling of accomplishment from Doodle that his pushed him over the limit.

    My Questions
    1. Why do you think the narrator when from wanting Doodle dead, to trying to improve Doodles skills so much he died?
    2. Do you think Doodles want to improve started to go away when he learned of the his coffin?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The narrator always loved his brother but he translated that to a different way towards the end of the story. He also found that Doodle did have true potential to succeed or get better. He found hope in Doodle and that pushed the narrator into caring and helping him.

      Delete
    2. I think after seeing his coffin, it gave him a push to strive harder and almost a reality check about who he is and what was supposed to happen to him. He became such a strong boy, and with all the high standards and help from his brother he probably felt a sense of accomplishment by overcoming that obstacle in his life.

      Delete
    3. Again, in the beginning the author made all of the readers think he loved his brother to the fullest extent, but when he did see the coffin, it was just almost like forcing the author to just leave Doodle to die.

      Delete
  8. 1. The Scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because the bird is supposed to live down south near Florida and South America but got pushed by a storm to fly way up north. Now Doodle got pushed by his brother to work hard past his limits. They both died because of a strong storm.
    2. The most powerful sensory image to me was "It was the clove of seasons, Summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that ibis lit in the bleeding tree. The flower garden was stained with rotting brown magnolia petals and ironweeds grew rank amid the purple phlox.". This sensory image really paints a picture in my head. For an example when it says the part about summer being dead but autumn not born yet, it makes me imagine cool nights and mild days. Leaves are just about to turn and frost in the mornings.
    3. I took away lots from this story. One theme that I took away was you don,t know what you got till it's gone. This story was written in a sad tone. It speaks to me because I couldn't imagine losing my brother to something like a storm.
4.1 The poems message is leave alone things that you love. I do agree with the poems message because like if Doodles brother wouldn't of pushed him so hard he wouldn't of died. "Give it a chance to see sunlight for itself.". Doodles brother should have just left him alone.
4.2 This poem suggests advice to the narrator like leave what you love alone.

What would have the narrator have done different with Doodle if he knew that he would have died that way?

How do you think the narrator told his parents what happened?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If the narrator knew that Doodle would die that way I don't think he would have pushed him as hard as he did because Doodle did have a serious problem and it was said that he shouldn't get too scared or tired. The training was a huge cause of Doodle's death

      Delete
  9. 1.)The scarlet ibis died when Doodle died. It also bled when he began to bleed. At the very end of the story, Doodle's brother said he was sheltering his fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of rain. I began to think his brother was the bird but then realized he was a part of the bird and that in the summer he was good and healthy but when the fall and winter came around, they both began to die because of natural causes.

2.) As Doodle and his brother are practicing to walk his brother said something that really caught my attention. "I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death." As complex as this sentence is, it has a simple meaning... Doodle was his brother's pride and joy and he had his ups and he had his downs but through all of that, Doodle is his brother and he loves him very very much. Going back to this sentence after finishing the story, I noticed how descriptive and important this sentence is towards the entire thing.

3.) From this story I took a sense of pride towards my own siblings. I can truly relate to the burden feeling that my sister inflicts upon me or that I inflict upon my brother. I realized that all siblings fight and sometimes don't like each other very much but at the end of the day, we love each other to death and would do anything for them.

4.) This poems message is that if we really do love something or someone, we have to let them be for the better. I do agree somewhat with this poems message but when someone that you love tells you to go away, they need you more than ever. If my family would've given up on me when I pushed them away, it would have been even worse. "Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself." This excerpt sums up the whole poem for me by telling how people need to struggle by themselves in order to learn.

4 continued.)The advice this poem offers to the narrator from "The Scarlet Ibis" is to leave Doodle be for his own good. Maybe it was because he never let Doodle by himself that he died. Or maybe he got so little results because he was helping Doodle too much.

    What was wrong with Doodle?

Why wasn't the narrator scared of what would happen to Doodle if he kept pushing him so hard?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The narrator probably was scared somewhere within himself but ignored that fear because he was so eager to make his brother just like him.

      Delete
    2. The narrator wasn't scared about what would happen to doodle because he was embarrassed of having a brother who couldn't walk, swim, box, or even climb. He became selfish in his own ways so that he didn't have a stupid brother when school started. Would you do the same thing the narrator did?

      Delete
    3. I think the narrator wasn't scared of what would happen to Doodle if he kept on pushing is because at first he didn't really like Doodle at first so he pushed him to see what he could actually do. Then he saw that Doodle was his only brother so the narrator thought that he needed to teach stuff to him

      Delete
    4. I think Doodle's brother wasn't scared that he was pushing hi to far because he was more worried about himself and what other people thought of him not Doodle.

      Delete
    5. I think the narrator was embarrassed of having a brother that couldn't do all the normal things he could. He was ashamed and I think he felt it was his fault. He wanted the best for his younger brother as we do for our younger siblings.

  10. 1. The scarlet ibis is a symbol for doodle in many ways. First, when he passed away he was bleeding on his shirt making him the color of the scarlet ibis. Also, Doodle relates to the scarlet ibis because when he died he died as someone who is not the same as everyone else. The scarlet ibis was far away from home so it was different, and Doodle died a person who was not the same as all of the other people, just with his skills. Also both of them died from the effects of storms.

    2. “A grindstone stands where the bleeding tree stood, just outside the kitchen door, and now if an oriel sings in the elm, its song seems to die up in the leaves, a silvery dust.” This quote from the story “The Scarlet Ibis” put many images and sounds into my head. First, the description of the location makes me imagine the exact scene in the story. Also, the part about the oriel makes me hear the bird and it’s sound dying off in the autumn while the leaves are blowing all around it.

    3. The short story was very sad, but I took away much more than the emotions that I felt. What I took away from the story was the meaning of the love between the brothers. It started off as the kind of love where on of the boys was embarrassed, but ended with the two brothers sincerely loving each other. This made me feel like all siblings should learn how to get along with each other before it is too late.

    4. I think that the poem's message is to tell how to let someone grow up you must let them go their own path. The plant in the poem being the person, you must not mess with it. If this is the meaning of the poem I do not agree with it. Everyone needs some influence from someone in their life to help them to grow and to learn. In the poem the author says; “Much growth is stunted by too careful Prodding.” This part of the poem tells how you should not prod to carefully, does this mean that you can prod not carefully? Is this what the narrator of the story did?

    5. This story gives advice to the narrator of “The Scarlet Ibis” because it tells that he should have just let Doodle figure everything out by himself. It could also be telling the narrator that everything involved in Doodle’s death will figure itself out.

    Questions:

    1. Could the narrator have kept Doodle from dying?

    2. How could Doodle’s parents have come more involved i n his life to help him?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think he could have kept him from dying cause if he stayed with him he would have died also or maybe he just got so worked up that his hart gave out and maybe the narrator could have saved him from dyeing cause he would have felt more safe maybe.

      Delete
    2. I think if anything the narrator helped Doodle keep the inspiration and dedication to work hard and strive to be like the other kids. Even though the narrator had the wrong morals in his mind along the way, he taught Doodle to be a fighter and work for the very best. Doodle definitely tried to live up to his brother's expectations, and when he died it was all an accident and frustration of wanting the best for Doodle.

      Delete
    3. In my opinion, Doodle's parents should have taken more control over the unfortunate situation and not just given the author the burden of taking care of his disabled brother. It is the parent's job to take care of their children and even if your child is not the way you planned for them to be, you must still accept your child and take care of them in the best way that you can. The parents should have been more evolved in their son's life and supported him more. The parents should have been doing what they put their son in charge to do.

  11. #1 The scarlett Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because like Doodle they were so simplile that it turned into sophistication. Like for an example the family was so magnified when they saw the bird, yet the bird is so simplile and basic, like Doodle.
#2 " it was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree." This sensory image is most powerful to me, its so simple yet it brings an eagerness. It's so beautiful when you read this, even though you have seen it for yourself. This creates a mystery almost, see this first sentance in the text is telling you the whole story. It starts out so simple( ibis and doodle) , but seems so sophisticated, then the tree bleeds( the ibis falls from the tree and dies, doodle won't wake up with a shirt soaked with blood.
#3 I've tooken a lot from this story, but one thing stuck. This is that you need to appreciate the simplicity of everything, especially if its a freind or a family member, due to the fact that once it dies you see the sheer sophistication that it brought and holds, even after death.
#1 This poem is telling us that success is not givin but is earned like a plant, you need to give it enough to live but not too much to where it doesn't seek things for itself, the same goes for people. I do agree with this message because it makes sense and is true. " Much growth is stunted by too careful prodding." In this excerpt, it is stating that helping something to the point that it won't stand for itself, is stunting its growth, yes it is easier for the moment but what about when it gets older?
#2 This peom is offering this lesson to the "Scarlett Ibis" because Doodle was forced and got his hand held so much that he had no idea what to do when he had no hand to hold, this resulted in his death.

  13. 1. The Scarlet Ibis is like doodle because of how it grows in it's life and what a short life it has. Doodle died in a storm just like Doodle did. Doodle didn't grow much and neither did the Scarlet Ibis and even though they started changing late they changed a lot from what they used to be.
    2. One sensory Image that popped up to me was "the graveyard flowers were blooming and smelling so nice" that is kind of an onomatopoeia because of that a graveyard is a place for the dead when the flowers were coming to life. it is so sad but yet the smell is so nice.
    3. I think what I got out of The Scarlet Ibis was that even though life is so short for many of us and we might learn slowly we still can get the best out of life even though it might be sad or terrible at some points in life.
4.1. I think the message of the poem is that we should not take care of things too much or else it will not learn from life and it won't have the skills that it needs in life.
4.2. To not really nurture our things or our children like the parents do to doodle in The Scarlet Ibis.
Q.1. When Doodle got renamed to Doodle why would his brother want to do that to Doodle when it was his birth name and Doodle was kind of a silly name?
Q.2. When the doctor told him what not to do why would he not follow those rules once he got out of the house to teach Doodle how to walk and explore with him

The narrator renamed Doodle because he thought that his real name was not a very good one. He even described it as, "A name that would only look good on a tombstone." Therefore, although the name may have been a silly name, it was still better than his first one

      Delete
    4. Doodle was originally named William Armstrong as his family thought that he would be dead very soon. William was more of a name to use as a memory on his gravestone rather than a name that kids would remember in school. When Doodle started to learn and grow, he did everything backwards and was a crazy child. Therefore his brother gave him the name Doodle. Doodle was a name that the two brothers could share and have a special connection with forever.

      Delete
    5. The narrator renamed Doodle because he started seeing his potential. The narrator must have given such a silly name becausehr wanted someonehe could laugh and have fun with. All the narrator wanted was someone to cli, b trees with.

  15. 1. The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle, because of his restrictions holding him back to fly. The bird has something wrong with it and therefore, is unlike the others. He gets stuck and without the support from the other birds he falls to the ground and dies. This relates to Doodle because he was born as a "different" type of person. He wasn't like the rest and he needed a little extra support to survive. Both the bird and Doodle die in the storm, and it shows how different they were from everyone else, Doodle's brother was so set on his becoming more "normal", that he forgot about how hard it was for his little brother to do all these things.
    2. I found the rain scene to be the most effective with all the emotion and imagery used to make you feel like you were right there along with the characters. "...lightning was playing across half the sky and thunder roared out, hiding even the sound of the sea." The specific descriptions and figurative language really help bring this scene to live and give a clear mental image in the reader's mind.
    3. One of the main ideas I took away from this story was the hope and accomplishments Doodle and his brother had to overcome his disability. Even thought they were both determined for different reasons, Doodle wanting to be happy and live life and his brother wanting him to be more like the other kids at school, they made progress and proved that no matter how hard the task, hard work pays off in the end.
    4) 1. The poem is trying to tell us sometimes you have to let the things you love the most go and experience life on their own. You can't keep persuading and pushing them to do something they can't, and make them ashamed of themselves because they didn't meet your goals. As the poem states, "The things we love we have to learn to leave alone." I agree with this poems response to an extent, because I believe you should always be there to push the ones we love a little harder and farther, but you shouldn't make them feel ashamed of themselves if they don't meet their goal. Always be there for them to have someone to lean on.
    2. The poem seems to give the author of "The Scarlet Ibis" inspiration of the story. It reminds me of how hard the brother pushed Doodle, and even though it helped it was almost too much, and when Doodle didn't do as he was expected he became ashamed of himself and began to loose hope due to the high expectations his brother set for him, not even realizing how long and hard Doodle would try.
    Questions:
What do you think happened to Doodle in the rain? What caused him to start bleeding and eventually die?
What do you think Doodle took away from seeing the Ibis bird struggling and eventually fall to the ground and die?

    1. If I had to guess I would think that Doodle was pushed to hard that day by his brother and that is what caused him to start bleeding and die. Also, Doodle was getting sick and probably couldn't handle his daily workouts in his body's state.

    2. Doodle may have taken away the reality that one day that may be him falling and dying. This may have caused him to push too hard in the rain.

  16. 1. The scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because first of all the bird has skinny little long legs just like Doodle. The Scarlet Ibis also is the color red which is tho color of blood and death. Everyone expected Doodle to die.
    2. The most powerful sensory image was when it said, "He was born when I was six and was, from the outset, a disappointment. He seemed all head, with a body which was red and shriveled like an old man's." This quote is very sad and says that Doodle is weak and is probably not going to live. I can picture his tiny body with his big red head.
    3. I took away from this story that you should never doubt anyone no matter what. I also think that you should always have hope in someone. Nobody really had hope for Doodle to live yet he did.
    Poem response:
    1. I think this poems message is that to let someone or something travel their own path. Let them choose their own destiny. It says, "Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself." I think this means to not interfere with something that has chose its own path.
    2. I think this poem offers advice to the author by how nobody really cared about Doodle except for his brother. Everybody else just kind of waited for him to die but he never did. His destiny was for him to live and nobody interfered with it.

    1. Q1. Why doesn't anyone except for Doodle's brother have faith in him that he is going to live, walk, swim and do all things a normal kid could have done?

Q2. Why does Doodle's brother make him touch his own coffin? What was the significance of it?

      Delete
    2. No one except for Doodle's brother has faith in him because the first thought that happened when he was born was, "He is going to die." Therefore, since then everyone tough lowly of him and that is why they have no faith.

    3. Q3. How does hope and faith effect someone's destiny?

      Delete
  17. 1. The scarlet ibis was a symbol for Doodle because of the way it died. It's body weak and limp, covered in the color red. The bird had came so far only to die right there in that moment, beaten by fate. This was the same case for Doodle. He should have died after birth, but did not. He was supposed to be mentally "not there" but his brain was normal. He was told that he would never walk but with the help of his brother, just like how the storm helped bring the scarlet ibis to their yard, Doodle learned to walk. Doodle and the scarlet iris both traveled a seemingly impossible journey, but only to perish at the end.
    2. "Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty." This piece of imagery was quite powerful. Although it may not have been as strong in the moment when first read, it comes alive when Doodle loses his life at the end. When Doodle is described sitting there, covered in red and broken, The similarity of him and the scarlet ibis becomes very alive.
    3. What I can take away from this story is a lesson of importance of family. Although your siblings or parents of whoever may not be what you expect or wish of them, they are all you truly have in the end. Never take that for granted because it could be gone in a heartbeat.
    4. The poem's message is one of great wisdom. The author writes, "The things we love we have to learn to leave alone". It is basically saying to let people grow up to be themselves, rather than try to pave the way in your own image. I do not completely agree with this message because everybody needs a little bit of guidance in their life, but not complete control. This same statement could be advice to the narrator of "The Scarlet Ibis" because although he loves his brother very much, he would have been better off not pushing the poor kid so hardly to be normal.

Interpretive Questions: Why does the narrator feel it necessary to do such terribly mean things to his brother?
How could the narrator hate his brother so much as to plan to kill him in the beginning?

  18. Here are my critical level questions: How does the passage of time change people and their feelings about past events?

Is it human nature to want to do something for our own pride? Do we ever do anything that isn't for our own gain?

  19. 1. I think the scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle because when the scarlet ibis died it was abandoned by other birds and was brought in by a storm. Doodle also was abandoned by his brother and killed in the storm.
    2. A sensory image in this story would be when the narrator is describing how the season is changing into fall. He says that the flower garden was "stained with rotting brown magnolia petals". For me that defiantly puts an image in my head about how autumn is mainly things dying like grass, flowers, and leaves falling from the trees.
    3. I took away from this story that life is precious and the simplest mistake could cost you your life, so you have to be careful about the decisions you make because they could change your life for forever and change someone else's life.
    1. I think the poem's message is you can't be to protective over things, you have to let them grow for themselves and become stronger without any help.
I agree with this message especially when the poem says "the things we love we have to learn to leave alone." I think this is saying you may love something so much, but you have to learn to give it its own space.
    2. The poem offers advice to the narrator of "The Scarlet Ibis"... you have to let people learn things for themselves and have to give them space.

Questions: If the narrator knew it would be better to give Doodle some space, would he?
Why did he leave his brother behind to fend for himself when he knew that he would probably need help?

    4. The Old Woman Swamp gives the two brothers an outlet to bond and have a place where no one can judge them, and they can be themselves. Doddle can learn how to swim here and listen to his brother without anyone judging him. It is great for them both to have a place where they can let go and be with each other in a comfortable environment. The Swamp evokes the true feelings that the brothers share as best friends.

  23. Is the first sentance of this text summarizing the story in a sense, " It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree."?

Did the training and pushing for Doodle.aid him in any way?

    1. I think the training and pushing for Doodle aided him and made him more of a 'normal' child. Doodle's brother taught him to walk and do all the things a normal kid could do. It helped him fit in.

    2. But he had to get his hand held the whole time during training, so when his brother rain away from doodle during the storm, Doodle had no idea what to do right? So my point is that the training was for his brother's mantiality, not for Doodles sake.

  26. 1. The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle because the bird was uncoordinated just like Doodle, and its wings hung down loosely as his feathers dropped to the ground and floated away. Both of their deaths are tragic yet beautiful, because they both died doing what they loved.
    2. One sensory image that I felt was the most powerful was when black clouds began to gather and the sun disappeared as darkness descended. This portrays foreshadowing and gives the reader strong emotions. It makes me feel like a terrible event is about to occur, and makes me want to continue reading the story.
    3. Throughout the course of this story, all I could think about was my relationship with my sister and how much she has taught me. She has made me who I am today and now I respect how much she pushed me when I was younger. From now on, I will listen more to what my sister has to say, because I realize that she has much more wisdom than I do, and has much more to teach me.

    Questions:
    1. Why does the author want Doodle to succeed?
    2. How does this family get through this unfortunate event?

    Poem:
    1. The message of this poem is to let the weak grow, and learn through their own experiences as opposed to having someone there for them every second of everyday. Someone needs to push them, but then let them learn on their own and grow through their own mistakes. As the poem says "Such watchful nurturing may do it harm.", this is stating that if the needy become dependent upon you, they will not be able to break off and learn on their own. I do agree with this poem's message because I learned by skiing with people who were better than me, or having to fend for myself, which made me learn and grow faster.
    2. The poem gives the narrator of "The Scarlet Ibis" the advice to let the weak grow on their own and to not help them through every problem that they hit. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, therefore the weak will grow on their own. The poem suggests to give the weak some space, so they don't become dependent on those who nurture them.

      1. How does our family impact the decisions we make in our society?
      2. How do our emotions effect our actions?

    2. I think the reason why the author wants Doodle to succeed is because of his pride and he wants a brother that he can be proud of, like in this quote, "I wanted more than anything else someone to box with..." and when he finally could have that relationship, he took advantage of it.

      Delete
    3. I think the author honestly wanted Doodle to succeed, was because in the story he said he was embarrassed of having a 5 year old brother who couldn't walk. But I still don't understand why he left Doodle behind in the end.

      Delete
    4. The author wants Doodle to succeed because it will give him a sence of pride to take his "invalid brother" and get him functioning like a normal person. Doodle became the authors project that he obsessively worked with. By the end is desire to became so bad, the limit was pushed.

      Delete
  27. 1.The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle because both the bird and Doodle traveled so far and then had a painful death. For example, the scarlet ibis flew all the way from South Africa and then as it got to this bleeding tree and couldn't fly any longer and died. As for Doodle he came so far as well, he learned how to walk although the odds were against him and he was trying to do other things. But just like the scarlet ibis after coming so far he soon came to an end almost as if it were destined.
    2. One image that really spoke to me in the text was right after Doodle learned to walk and he walked in front of his parents and Aunt Nicey. I picked this spot in the text because it really touched me on all five senses. I could see Doodle walking, I could taste the tears of mamas sobbing, I could hear mamas kisses brought to Doodle and I could feel the joy that was brought to Doodle's brother in teaching him how to walk.
    3. What I took away from this short story was to always live life to the fullest because one day it can be gone. For example Doodle lived his life even though most people said he wouldn't be able to.
    4. I believe that the poems message is to let the things you love grow and make decisions on their own. If for example, parents never let children make dissuasions for themselves, then as the get into the real world how will the survive and live on their own. I do agree with this message because I know that if my parents didn't let me decide to do some things then I wouldn't be the person I am today.
    5. I think that the advice that this poem offers to the narrator of the scarlet ibis is to have let Doodle do a thing for himself once instead just telling mim what to do all the time. When Doodle learned to walk I think the narrator wanted him to walk more than Doodle did. Also teaching him everything the narrator wanted to do was probably not what Doodle wanted to do himself.
    Questions:
Did Doodle really want to learn how to swim, climb trees, and run?
Why did the narrator like to teach Doodle how to do all these things?

  29. 1. The scarlet ibis and Doodle both die of exhaustion. They both were in a storm and things got too rough for them. They were both so delicate and the color red was there too when they died.

    2. At the end of the story it says “I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet ibis from the heresy of the rain.” The narrator realizes that he pushed Doodle too far and that he should have loved him for who he was not what he should have been. The narrator was too prideful and he finally realizes that.

    3. This story is about the relationship between brothers and the only thing that holds their relationship together is the fact that Doodle is crippled. The narrator wants Doodle to do everything that he can do. The narrator's pride gets in the way of things and he ends up pushing Doodle too hard. Older siblings want their younger siblings to do everything that they can do but they need to remember that they are unique and can do other things too.

    1. The poem is telling us that we don’t have to hold their hand. We need to let them grow up and to do things on their own. If we care for it to much it will die. I agree with the poem because there is not going to be someone watching your every move and making the decision. We need to learn from their own mistakes that’s how we grow in life.

    2. The poem is telling the narrator that he shouldn't have pushed Doodle too hard. “The things we love we have to learn to leave alone.” The narrator should have accepted Doodle for what he is not what he should be.

Why didn't the narrator accept Doodle for what he was?

How does pride get in the way for the narrator and Doodle’s relationship?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think pride got in the way of Doodle and the narrator because the narrator didn't want to be that kid with the weird brother. The narrator also felt it was his obligation to stand up for Doodle and try his best to help him be a normal kid.

      Delete
    2. I think the reason why the narrator didn't accept the way Doodle was, was because he didn't want to have a "crippled" brother, as he says in this quote, "Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother." So he wanted to "teach him to be as normal as possible.

      Delete
    3. I wondered that same question, why the narrator didn't except Doodle for who he was. The conclusion I came to was, the narrator wanted Doodle to be the brother the doctors said he never could be.

  30. 1. The scarlet ibis and Doodle are similar in the way that they both have so far but yet fallen far of where they need to be. The scarlet ibis had been swept by the wind had flown from the tropical aired place to doodles back yard. But all the scarlet's hard work vanished after the scarlet ibis died in the back yard of Doodle's hoe under the bleeding tree. This relates to Doodle because all of Doodle's hard work, swimming, running, walking, fighting, and climbing vanished after he died after the lightning strike hit the tree.

    2. The sensory image that i thought was the most powerful was when Doodle's brother painted a picture of them to showing them in the future with long beards and old skin, with him still pushing Doodle in the go cart. I think this is one of the most powerful sensory image because it shows how much determination Doodle's brother has. Also how much his brother needs to not be ashamed of his brother.

    3. Disabled humans no matter who they are will always get judged, will always be looked at differently. Even their family members judge them, they are ashamed of their disabled sibling or kid because of their disability. This is what I took from this short story. Not only do people judge them they refuse to accept them for who they are and feel the need to have to change them just so they don’t feel ashamed.

4.1. I feel that the poem is trying to tell us that we need to give people, our friends, our family, the chance to change and fight life by the selves and only help them when its necessary. I do agree with the poems message because I do not like when people try to change me or make decisions for me that they think is best.

4.2. This poem advice to the narrator is that we Doodle’s family should accept him the way he is and not to try to change him. Telling Doodle’s brother that he needs to let his brother figure out how to do things by himself and to let him grow.

The parents were not involved in Doodles learning process because they knew he was going to die early.

  32. 1. Scarlet Ibis is a really big symbol in this story, especially for Doodle. I say that, because Scarlet Ibis teaches Doodle how to walk in the story. I think that is a really good thing to do and I'm glad Doodle learned how to walk. Then again, Scarlet Ibis never really wanted a brother, but then I am glad he liked to spend time with Doodle by teaching him how to walk. Then again, the end of the story was way different then the beginning. Scarlet Ibis left Doodle to die in the rain.
    2. I think one image in this story was the red bird that fell from the top of the Bleeding Tree. I think it is an image in this story, because Aunt Nicey said "Dead birds is bad luck, specially red dead birds!" I think this bird gave Doodle bad luck, because in the end of the story he was left behind by Scarlet Ibis, he then slowly died, so I think that shows bad luck.
    3. I took away from this story, that Scarlet Ibis seemed like such a good brother to Doodle, but in the end you notice that he really isn't. Scarlet Ibis wanted to teach Doodle how to walk, swim, climb trees, and more. The story has a quote saying "I put him on his feet at least a hundred times each afternoon." This quote really made me think that Scarlet Ibis really wanted his brother Doodle to learn how to walk. I just don't understand the ending of this story and why Scarlet Ibis left his brother behind.
    Interpretive questions:
-During the end, why did Ibis leave Doodle to die in the rain?
-Does the red dead bird and Doodle relate in someway?

    "Women with the Flower"
1.The message in this poem, is that it is almost just like in "The Scarlet Ibis" in the first stanza of this poem, that you have to watch and nurture the plant. The plant is almost like Doodle. In the second stanza of this poem is almost saying that after growing and over coming goals like Doodle did with learning how to walk, you almost just have to let go and leave it alone, just like Scarlet Ibis did with Doodle. I do agree with the authors message in this poem, because it is almost like she wrote this poem based off of "The Scarlet Ibis" it is just saying how you watch things grow up, then in the end, you just leave them alone and there to fall apart.
    2. The advice this poem is giving the narrator of "The Scarlet Ibis" is that in the beginning you really do love and care for some things, but then in the end, you just almost just stop caring. The advice given is just that you should always love something or someone til the end, not just in the beginning, but in the end too.

  34. This poem is relating to our relationships with other humans and how we can over tend to others affairs this is an easy thing to do if you care for someone you want to know what there doing, who there hanging out with e.t.c it reminds me of the saying "if you love someone set them free, if they return they are yours." The reasons I believe this to be true is the lines 7-9 talk about how growth is lost to careful prodding and eager tenderness. I agree with the poem, we have to let people who have involvement in our life make there own choices and try not to influence them to do things they do not wish to do.
The poem offers the advice to the author about how should be less involved in Doodle's life and how he should let Doodle make more of his own choices.

Why does Doodles brother what him to fit in at school so badly?

Why did the narrator leave Doodle in the storm?

    1. The narrator wants him to fit in at school so badly for more of a selfish reason. He doesn't want people to know he has a disabled brother who cant "keep up" with the other kids at school.

      Delete
  35. 1) The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle because at the end Doodle dies and looks like the scarlet ibis that they saw die. Doodle and the ibis are both weakened from a storm when they die. Another thing that they have in common is that they both had red on them when they died, Doodle had blood on him and the bird had its feathers.
    2) A sensory image was the very end when Doodle and the narrator were running home from the storm and Doodle fell behind. Doodle was yelling, "Brother, Brother, don't leave me! Don't leave me!" It made me think that the narrator would go back and help Doodle get home safely but the narrator kept running and only went back when Doodle didn't get back.
    3) That the narrator wanted Doodle to be like normal kids and that after teaching him to walk he felt that he could teach Doodle to do anything and that he could make Doodle more athletic.
    ______________________________________________________________________

    1) The message of the poem is that if you take care of something to often or too much then it will not grow right, but that if you let it grow on its own then it will be better.
    2) That the narrator should not make Doodle learn to swim but to let Doodle grow and develop in his own time and his own way.
    ______________________________________________________________________

    My questions are:
    1) At the end of "The Scarlet Ibis" why did the narrator not go back and help Doodle when Doodle yelled for him to come back.
    2) Why did the narrator tell Doodle that he would have to touch his casket or he would leave him in the barn loft.

  36. how did the narrator tell his parents that doodle died?

  37. I think the scarlet ibis is a symbol of Doodle because the ibis is out of place in their yard just like doodle is kind of out of place in his world. Also they're both fragile creatures and when doodle dies he is bleeding and the bird is scarlet a similar color to color blood. When they both die too they are bent crooked and thin.

2.I feel the most powerful sensory image was " Even in death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of red flowers..." It puts a good picture in my mind of the bird and how even though it is dead, it lies beautifully on the ground.

    3. I took away that death isn't always an ugly thing. It is as natural in human beings as it is in animals. It says that these things are unavoidable like an act of nature and it can be made into a beautiful thing.

4a. The poems message is you cant smother something if you want it to grow, if you try to hard to make it grow you could harm or kill this thing of yours. In the poem it uses a plant and says that "much growth is stunted by too careful prodding". When you love something you have to let it grow on its own but still take care of it when is needed.

4b. The advice this poem could offer the narrator of the "The Scarlet Ibis" is that he cant push Doodle too far without bringing hard to him. He has to let these things happen and give him help when he needs it not smother him and push him constantly.

    1. It is only clear once it has already happened, because people learn from their mistakes and no one person is perfect enough to never make that mistake. The narrator thought he was doing the right thing by pushing Doodle, but he was really just digging his grave.

  40. 1. The scarlet ibis is a symbol for Doodle because although the bird passed away like Doodle did it still showed that everything and everyone has an inner beauty, as shown in this quote, “Even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the Earth like a broken vase of red flowers, and we stood around it, awed by its exotic beauty.” The death of the bird compares to when Doodle first began to walk and everyone was so happy for him that they all began to cry.
    2. One sensory image that I felt was most powerful was when James Hurst was describing Doodle’s death. The reason why I think that’s the most powerful is because of the way he worded the scene was so heart breaking. The fact that Doodle’s last words to his brother was, “Brother, Brother, don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” is so difficult to take in because that’s just what happened. An “evil” kicked in and caused his brother to die in a storm.
    3. One thing I can take away from the story is to always have faith and let the weak grow. The reason I say this is because no one believed that Doodle do so much as live for how long he did. Nobody also believed he’d ever walk let alone climb trees, run and swim. And even though his brother had faith in him for the wrong reasons, Doodle still learned to do everything that others could do.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. In the poem, "Woman with Flower" by Naomi Long Madgett, the message conveyed throughout the poem is that if you want something to grow the right way you have to let it be independent and learn through it’s own way. For example, when she says, “The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction;Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself.” This shows how you have to be patience and let the flower be independent to let it grow the way it should.
    2. This poem gives advice to the brother in “Scarlet Ibis” is to not push Doodle so hard to become like everyone else and to leave Doodle alone to learn what he wants to learn at his own pace and also to let the weak grow.

    Interpretive Questions:
    1. Do you think that the way the narrator was taught by his parents to do everything he taught Doodle affected how he taught Doodle?
    2. Why do you think the parents didn’t try and teach Doodle to walk just because the doctor said he wouldn’t be able to?

  42. 1. In the story "Scarlet Ibis" when Doodle was born he couldn't get too cold or too hot, or too tired. Also he had to be treated gently. The Scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because the Ibis is like Doodle, they died the same way. They both got caught in a storm and died after the long journey. Doodle was like the Ibis but he wasn’t a bird, but they acted the same way, and did everything the same way.

    2) One example of sensory image to me would be the father having a casket built for Doodle. Naming him something that would only sound good on a gravestone. This can relate to lot of history, where if a baby animal is the runt of the litter. The runt is expected to die or is just killed to prevent it from growing up.

    3. I took away much more than the feelings and thoughts that i had. What i got was that story was the meaning of love between the two brothers. It started off as the kind of love where on of the boys was embarrassed, but ended with the two brothers sincerely loving each other. This made me feel like all siblings should learn how to get along with each other before it is too late. So that they don’t dislike the other in the years to come.

    The Poem
    1. this poem is showing that you love something don't go crazy and be with it all the time, don't try to take care of it, if it doesn't need it. Only go to it when it needs you.
Yes I agree with the poem, because if your around the thing that you love all the time, then you might get tired of it.
    2. This poem is showing this lesson when Doodle was forced and got his hand held so much that he had no idea what to do when he had no hand to hold, this resulted in his death.

    Questions:
    1. What do you think happened to Doodle in the rain? What caused him to start bleeding and eventually die?
    2. How could the narrator hate his brother so much as to plan to kill him in the beginning?

    1. I think he was planning on killing him because he as very weak and didn't care about Doodle.

  44. Do you think the brother pushing past the limits and giving Doodle high expectations gave him a positive or negative mindset on his condition?

  45. 1. The scarlet ibis is similar to Doodle because they are both fragile and weak. They both can’t take care of themselves either.

    2. The biggest sensory image I read was when Doodle’s brother made him touch his own casket or else he would leave him there. This shows how cruel humanity can be sometimes.

    3. What I took from this story is that sometimes you have to let people be on their own instead of nurturing them so they can’t take care of themselves when they get older. Doodle was nurtured too much so he was weak and couldn’t take care of himself.

    Poem

    1. The message is that you sometimes need to let things learn on their own so they are prepared for what’s coming up ahead in life.

    2. The moral of the story is that you need to help others find their own path in life but don’t go the whole way with them, but we still need to take care of eachother.

Are there children that have these disabilities?

    1. I wondered the same thing, I tried really hard to think of what would be wrong with Doodle. Kids with disabilities can accomplish these things but they have to learn that their own pace. They can't be forced upon something, because they have to want to do it for them to learn anything.

  50. 1.) The Scarlet Ibis traveled long and hard to get to where it is now. This bird doesn’t belong in a cold autumn backyard, it needs to be in the warm arms of the tropic where it came from. This relates back to Doodle, because Doodle maybe doesn’t belong in the family he was put in. His parents didn’t even seem to think he was going to live and pretty much had no hope. Even Aunt Nicey told them that red dead birds were bad luck, so maybe the death of the bird brought the family bad luck in the way of taking a loved one, that had a low chance of living.

2.) The most power sensory detail in “The Scarlet Ibis” is when he finds his brother dead. “Limply, he fell backwards onto the earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” This final quote immediately put a disturbing image in my head and caused my heart to dropped, but it strangely made me want to read on.

3.) After reading this short story I realized that you can’t always have everything handed to you on a silver platter. Sometimes children are born different, but that doesn’t mean that you can neglect them. The narrator pushed his brother to do things that were once thought to be impossible coming from him, but he found his way. This story gave me a real insight on what some people have to deal with every day and got me thinking about how fortunate I am.

    Poem

1.) The poem states that you can’t also force something upon someone or something. They have to learn at their own pace, and if they dont something could go terribly wrong and affect others. I do agree with what the poem is saying, you can’t force someone to do something. For example… if a kid signs up to play football, because his dad forced him to, but he still doesn’t play and doesn’t like it. Then there is no point.

2.) The poem offers the narrator advice by showing that he should’ve let his brother grow up by himself and teach himself to do the stuff his brother wants him to do at his own pace.

    Questions
    1. Why did Doodle’s brother leave him when he knew he was afraid of being alone?
    2. Why did the narrator want to teach his brother all these things?
    3. When do you make that decision to push someone above and beyond?

  51. The Scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle because they died in a similar way they both were curled up under a tree and in a sort of balled up shape. The narrator states "How many miles it had traveled to die like this." Which is like Doodle because he had been through so many hardships which are the miles and then he just died like that.
    2. One sensory image that I felt was was so powerful was the narrator kept mentioning "the bleeding tree." This was really powerful because the season that the story takes place in is like Fall, and that is like a deathly time. The bleeding tree just stands out because I can really in vision this tree.
    3. What I took away from this story is that you never know when someone is going to die and you will never be ready for when it is that time, so cherish every moment you have with someone.
    1. The poems message is saying don't smother someone or something with what you want. Let it grow on its own and develop its own.
    2. The advice that it offers to the narrator of "Scarlet Ibis" is that you need to let it grow on its own.
    Interpretive Questions

  53. Do you think that the parents of Doodle really cared that he died or that the were expecting this to happen?

  54. 1. The scarlet Ibis is like doodle because when doodle died he looked like the scarlet Ibis his neck was skinny and long like the scarlet Ibis's and he was covered in blood
    2. The sensory image that really stood out to me was when it said and there I lay protecting my Scarlet Ibis from the rain. This effected me because I could not imagine how it would feel if you brother had died and all you could do is lay over his/her dead body
    3. One thing that I will take away from this story is I will not push my younger sibling past his limits and I will stick with him wherever we are
    4. One thing that I will take away from this story is I will not make someone do something just because of my own selfish need.
    1. The message of this poem is you sometimes you have to let the thing that you love the most alone. I agree with this message because in the scarlet Ibis if the main character had not had been so pushy and had let his brother alone sometimes especially the day that doodle died then doodle may have still been alive.
2.Some advise that this poem gives the narrator of the scarlet ibis is he should have let doodle do his own thing because what if doodle did not want to do everything he made him do

  55. One question that I have is what does this short story tell us about how we should treat your younger siblings.
Another question I have is does selfishness have a big part in this short story because the narrator was kind of hard on his brother on trying to make him run

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think selfishness is half the reason the narrator is pushing Doodle so hard. He feels embarrassed to have a disabled brother but at the same time he wants him to achieve something and he believes in him.

  56. Why did the narrator take off running leaving Doodle behind in the storm?

Do you think Doodle was pushed to his death or just that his body couldn't keep him alive anymore because of his disability?
